Austria wasn’t a new country count for my collection, but with the limited travel these days (Corona Virus 2020) I decided to take the scenic route on a roundabout around the world summer backpacking tour. The decision didn’t make sense logistically as I tried to make my way East. Meeting border closures and dead ends, I detoured and backtracked back West. And man, am I glad I did! Here you’ll find 13 alpine photos of Austria’s most scenic drive: Großglockner Hochalpenstrasse! The park is named after Austria’s largest mountain, Grossglockner, which translates directly to big bell ringer. After taking a look, you’ll definitely want to visit this national park!

Insert charming cowbells, sheep bleats, marmot squeaks, yodels, first gear, and black ice warnings on what might be the most scenic drive in the world.

Above is a photo of the switchbacks that you will find when you get there. (Check your brakes! My Serbian rental (hire) car was not well maintained!) It’s been rainy and chilly in the Alps all week. The fog has consistently covered most of the tall mountains. But it’s still beautiful. It made the light really interesting

Domestic goats, sheep, and cows roam freely through the park, adding to the charm.
You’ll find a colony of marmots who alert each other of intruders (ahem, me) with whistles.

There are so many Instagramable vista spots (read lookout rocks).

Waterfalls cascade right outside the car window. Bring a rain jacket.

Happy mountain girl. Can’t wait to share more on my journey around the world. I’m determined to not let Corona Virus ruin my trip. Cheers to adventures. XOX Katie
